Assisted Living Home for the Elderly Including
Those with Special Care Needs

Download the Crystal River Information Brochure

Crystal River is the newest in our family of Sunshine Gardens homes. Crystal River is the future of assisted living with a “smaller home” model focused on individual care versus the institutional design of the past. We offer 24 private bedrooms including three private suite layouts, bright new décor, a beautiful 180-gallon salt water aquarium, and an outdoor, open sun pavilion. It is unlike any other in Citrus County, and is changing the old-fashioned, undesirable “institutional facility living ways” of the past.

Tours are available at your convenience; please call our office to schedule or receive information about our home. Crystal River is located on the Nature Coast of Citrus County, Florida in the center of Crystal River behind Walgreens Drug Store at the intersection of U.S. Highway 19 and State Road 44 (Gulf to Lake Highway).

Grandma GleyRobert and Jackie Hilger were introduced to the assisted living industry early in their marriage by Jackie’s grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Gley (Grandma Gley), who had a passion for helping people, in particular the elderly. Grandma Gley began her career as a certified nurse in Passaic, New Jersey in September 1938. After gaining experience and becoming licensed by the Connecticut Public Welfare Council, Grandma Gley decided to open and manage a convalescent home, Mary Jane Boarding Home, in Mystic, Connecticut in 1946. She came back to Allwood, New Jersey in 1950 to open up a second Mary Jane’s Boarding Home which serviced ten elderly residents who needed help with meals, medication management, laundry, bathing, dressing, and more.

“I still remember the smell of Grandma Gley's cooking when I walked into that home,” states Mr. Hilger. “It was special.”

Grandma HarrietFor more than 21 years the Hilgers have built and operated independent assisted living homes around the country. They opened their first Sunshine Gardens in Marion County, Florida in 1992. Jackie proudly states that her mom, Mrs. Harriet Smith (Grandma Harriet), resided in that Sunshine Gardens for several years before she passed. After Grandma Harriet passed, they decided to sell their Marion County facility and move west to pioneer the first assisted living facility in Durango, Colorado. Sunshine Gardens West opened in 1997 and is connected to Sunshine Gardens Independent Living. They purchased a second assisted living facility overlooking the La Plata Mountain range, remodeled it, and renamed it Sunshine Gardens Country Home.

Family tradition continues with the our new assisted living home in Crystal River, Florida. Robert and Jackie Hilger chose this location because they had spent a good part of their lives in this part of Florida years ago. "There was a strong need in the community for a home, such as ours, and it made sense," states Mr. Hilger. "We are thrilled and honored to offer the best assisted living care, with a bit of sunshine, right here in Citrus County."Bob and Jackie Hilger

Bob and Jackie’s daughter Marilyn Karmazyn is in line to succeed the Hilger’s in the development and management of innovative methods of care in this realm of work with and for the elderly.

To this day, Robert and Jackie continue to have a passion for the elderly and are focused on providing them safe and loving homes. They truly love to help others live their lives out with grace and joy just as their mothers each did, and with their help. We invite you to give us a call so that we can tell you more about Sunshine Gardens and learn about how we might be able to help your loved one.
